Skiptrace was directed by Ranny Harlin who also made Die Hard 2, Deep Blue Sea and The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. He almost made Alien 3 but he changed his mind.

In 2001, Jackie Chan and Ranny Harlin would have filmed a movie titled Nosebleed. Jackie's character supposed to be a window cleaner on the World Trade Center, but on the day the shooting had to start, the  two towers collapsed. Fortunately, the script did not arrive on time.

However in 2016 a joint project was finished. In Skiptrace Jackie Chan's partner is Johnny Knoxville. It is the first time they appeared on film together. In theory this sounds like a good and logical decision, because Knoxville, who was in Jackass, has done crazy and extreme things as well like his colleague did.

The story of Skiptrace is that the character of Jackie Chan (Benny Chan) tries to find evidence against of a criminal named Matador. He wants to arrest him for a long time in order to get revenge on the death of his partner. Johnny Knoxville's character (Conner) has got an evidence. Benny has to return to Hong Kong with Conner safely while the bad guys are hunting them all the time.
The film follows the buddy-cop movie cliches too much. The story is so full of them that the movie becomes terribly predictable. This becomes particularly disturbing from the second half in a terrible way. Johny Knoxville personalizes a character like Owen Wilson's or Chris Tucker's. Some elements are from Rush Hour, Shanghai Noon, or Shanghai Knights. Situations and conflicts are pretty similar to those movies. The only difference is that Johny Knoxville doesn't have as much charisma as his predecessors.

Most of the time, I can predict what will happen before the story gets there. That's why we have got no surprises left for us. It is easy to find out that the chief boss is behaving so strangely because he works for criminals too. It wan't such a big reveal. Still, the film is still a lot of fun. I could really laugh at the scenes, even if the humor was forced. I didn't laugh so hard on a Jackie Chan movie a long time ago. It was more fun than Chinese Zodiac. I would add that a disgusting joke has also get into into the film, which was originally an outtane, but they left it in just for shits and giggles. That was pretty much off and I did not like it at all.

Skiptrace is not a bad movie, but the story is full of clichés and it gets really old and really fast just as like Rush Hour 3. The story and the acting needed to be more polished. The acting wasn't very authentic at places.
Sometimes I feel the film is held together by duct tape. Humor is the only thing that saves it. Its action scenes are decent at best, though the editing could have been much better in some places. At times the different shots don't match. Especially when they are in the scruffy looking three-wheeled car, Jackie's hairstyle suddenly changes from shot to shot for a short time. In the action point of view the factory scene was my favourite. Fortunately, they tried to reduce the CGI effects to a minimum, but even so, computer animation could be easily spotted here and there. Fortunately these are just two occasions.

I recommend the movie to all Jackie Chan fans. But do not expect too much from it! It's not up to  the classics like Drunken Master 2. Since New Police Story, almost just Shinjuku Incident and The Foreigner worked for me as a whole. Chinese Zodiac and Police Story 2013 could be watched only once or twice though.
