Russian-American actionfilm, 90 min

Hardcore Henry was a big surprise of the year 2016. I regret that I didn't watch this movie at the cinema. It could have been more spectacular on the big screen. The action scenes are so awesome and hair-raising. Those will make your teeth drop. Your satisfaction is guaranteed.

The film shows the enthusiasm of its makers. It seems like they put in a lot of work to finish it and loved what they did. Probably Hardcore Henry was made for the lovers of action movies and the creators were fans themselves as well.

In the beginning I was kind of sceptic. When I saw the poster and some pictures I didn't want to watch it. I thought it was a stupid movie about a lot of camera shaking and quick cuts, but I was wrong. The scenes are well thought out and choreographed. The action is easy to follow even in first person view. This sold the whole movie for me. It grabbed me in my chair from its first minute and didn't let me go until the end. It was short and sweet and didn't have any unnecessary padding. Hardcore Henry was like some ride at the amusement park. You are going to have an experience like you are playing with a first person shooter.
The film's plot and action scenes are similar to the most popular video game's. It is like the creators mixed the missions of GTA with the acobatic stunts and fight scenes of Miror's Edge. You can see everything from the main protagonist's point of view and you could feel that you are in our hero's shoes and you continuously get briefing for the missions. The makers of Hardcore Henry surely like Call of Duty or games like that, because you can find similar themes and references in the movie.

So you can fill the shoes of the main protagonist called Henry. He doesn't remember anything. His body is cybernetically enhanced. He received robotic limbs because he had an accident. He has lost his voice so he cannot speak. This could be a reference to those video games having virtually mute heroes controlled by the player (GTA 1-3). It's like you receive the missions continusously. The only difference is that it's like you watch your friend sitting next to you playing with a PC or a video game console. You can find every imaginable and enjoyable components of action movies from gunplays and fistfights to car chases.
I didn't have so much fun with an action movie for a long time. Hardcore Henry has got a good sense of humour. You can laugh a lot at Sharlto Copley's performance. He is the responsible for the mood of the film. It is almost as funny as it is fast-paced. The music in the film superbly supplies the adrenaline during the hair-raising stunts. Every time I hear Queen's Don't Stop Me Now in a TV advertisement I want to watch Hardcore Henry again.

The scenes were shot whit a GoPro Hero3 Black Edition cameras. It is still incredible that the budget was only 2 million dollars. The director (Ilya Naishuller) has already tried this technic out in music videos of his rock band. The first person view worked wonderfully. These music videos gave them the idea to make a movie.

First I thought that the constantly moving camera would bother me during the movie and I would be seasick. But fortunately this wasn't a problem at all. The unusual cinematography didn't bother me. However if you feel easily dizzy from handheld footage maybe this movie is not for you. At least this one was shot with a camera on the actor's head. They also used a stabilization system which makes the action easier to follow and more stable.
Hardcore Henry was entertaining as hell from start to finish. I would like to recommend you to watch this movie if you like action films. It won't be a letdown. It is worth to buy the German Bluray for the extras. You can get behind the scenes footage and more information how it was made. However I have to tell you that Hardcore Henry was rated R for various imaginable reasons which makes this movie more awesome. Only for adults.
